Snyder, like Romero, went for an ambiguous ending, but with a vastly different tone.
It isn’t unrealistic, as if he is telling us that everything is going to be okay.

He’s only saying that humanity has a chance if they keep fighting.
In Synder’s take, humans have zero chance.
It’s a zombie apocalypse after all.
There’s no coming back.
Everyone is going to die, and the only question is when.
This doesn’t mean that Synder had to show us the lead characters having their throats ripped out.
It’s more haunting to show us nothing and let our imagination do the work.
What’s just as haunting is how Snyder presented the ending.
Snyder’sDawn of the Deadfollows what Romero did withNight of the Living Dead.
He went through all of that, only to die when he was seconds from being saved.
It makes for an unshakable finale.
InDawn of the Dead, Zack Snyder accomplishes the same thing.
