Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) seems oblivious to the true identity of Player 001 inSquid GameSeason 2.
As it stands, Gi-hun can be taken at face value to assume he doesnt realize the truth.
But, its also plausible that this is a ruse, andSquid Gamehas more tricks up its sleeve.

When Young-il refers toGi-hun by name in the Six-Legged Pentathlon, hes taken by surprise.
You know my name?
Young-il may cover his tracks, butGi-hun does a double takeat the slip-up.

When playing Mingle, Jung-bae witnesses Young-ils true nature, as he murders a contestant.
Jung-bae tries to tell Gi-hun, admitting, Young-il scares me a little.
Gi-hun later tries to follow up, but Jung-bae brushes it off as the game making everyone crazy.
Still, seeds of doubt regarding Young-il have been planted.
During the rebellion, before the hostage guard is shot, he looks at Young-il with a distinct expression.
Gi-hun notices andtakes Jung-bae with himto the control room instead of Young-il, who volunteers.
Gi-hun claims this is because Jung-bae is his “friend” which implies that perhaps Young-il is not.
While some answers are provided, even more questions are raised heading into Season 3.
He demonstrated this when he won his initialSquid Gameand again when staging the rebellion.
Explaining the plan to his allies, he tells them to hide when the fight breaks out.
Jung-bae worries this will put the rest of their team at a disadvantage.
I know, admits Gi-hun.
Young-il questions him, Are you suggesting that we make a small sacrifice for the greater good?
Gi-hun replies, Even if it takes a sacrifice, we must put an end to this game now.
Gi-hun should be as morally questionable as Young-il himself, and thats the point.
It would also add a shocking layer toSquid Game’s fascinating moral exploration.
