To dig into Season 3 and what the future (or past?)
ALEX CLARKE: It was a joy having you there.
It’s always so nice to have guests.

We really enjoyed it, too, so thank you!
CONKIE: Wow, that’s a big question!
So, I think that that was very exciting.
We can’t match these two people.
Theyre too special and so individual.
How are we ever going to make anyone make that leap?
Image via Hallmark
Thank you to the casting and the wonderful actors that we ended up with.
If we can’t find Teen Del and Teen Colton, this is not going to work.
CLARKE: Oh my gosh, it worked, and then some.
Image via Hallmark
I agree with you.
I think Alex’s journey was a great one this season.
It was nice in that way.

How does that look when he’s meeting up with the Goodwin’s in the present?
How does he reconcile them?
And struggling with that and failing and making mistakes?
Image via Hallmark
I thought that was a really exciting road to go down.
CLARKE: Oh my gosh, so good.
CONKIE: Hes incredible.
Image via Hallmark
[Laughs] But he was up for it, the other production was up for it.
It was such a blessing that it all worked.
He’s just the best, and we’re so lucky to have him as part of our cast.

There’s one particular moment in Episode 7 that I really love.
It’s when Elliot tells Kat about kissing Emma, and then he asks her, What happens now?
She says, I don’t know.
Then he says, No.
CLARKE: It was about less is more, I think, in that moment.
Because one thing we never want to do on our show onThe Way Homeis go to cliche.
Why don’t you understand this?
Here’s how I feel about it.
Instead,we kind of wanted them to feel like they were at a bit of an impasse.
It was a unique situation because they’ve both done silly things.
you’re free to’t call one another out for them when you know you’re just as culpable.
I thought it was a really lovely scene in that it showed the inertia.
They couldn’t move forward because they’ve both made mistakes, and they’re still processing those mistakes.
They were both talking about, Well, did you kiss him just to keep score?
Well, we shouldn’thaveto keep score.
It was the sort of realization that these problems that they have might not be solved by talking more.
CONKIE: Well, I agree.
But this was just so dry, I guess is the word.
It was just like, What do we do?
I don’t know.
And that was that.
They just said, I don’t know.
We’ve seen them in all-out arguments, and it doesn’t help.
Certainly, Kat is very impulsive and leads with her heart.
Elliot is very pragmatic, but he overthinks.
We both know this is hard.
We don’t know what’s next.
Let’s take a minute.
I thought that was really great of them.
How Many Time Travelers Are Out There?
Were all Nick, honestly.
I’ll go to Episode 8 next.
I don’t necessarily want you to reveal the answer, but do you twoknowthe answer to that question?
[Laughs]
CLARKE: I was going to say I think we know a baseline.
CONKIE: We know the limits.
We don’t want it to become like a highway down there under that pond.
I mean, it would be kind of annoying, especially to the actors.
But I think that there’s always chances.
There’s always an opening.
CLARKE: I just love that, from Nick’s point of view, everyone is a time traveler!
That’s what I love about Nick and how Kerry James plays it.
He’s kind of all of us in moments like this.
It’s like, yeah, you could say that.
[Laughs] But I just love how he really just condenses it and makes it like the ColesNotes.
I love him for that.
CONKIE: Hes very straightforward, but he’s enjoying it so vicariously.
He’s a voyeur.
This Spine-Tingling Moment Made the Creators Cry Too
This is really happening.
For Episode 9, Heather, I’ll throw this your way because I believe you wrote that one.
There’s another very specific moment that I wanted to focus on.
CONKIE: He did an amazing job.
The look that they share was pretty amazing.
There were so many good ones that it was tough.
It was really tough.
But there was that one moment of just complete awe.
Again, less words.
We are very wordy, the two of us.
[Laughs] We work hard at not being wordy, but those moments where less is more again.
It was just one of those spine-tingling things.
You watch her face when Kat says, This is Elliot, my Elliot.
This is really happening.
I think that there was a moment of a meeting of minds, realizing they’re equals yet family.
As mom just said, less was more with the words in that moment.
They both portrayed it so brilliantly.
It’s written on their faces.
The other thing I will say is if you rewatch it, you have to watchChylersface.
It’s a perfect moment.
Is Andie Going to Do This?
The Season 3 finale features a very special series first.
It’s such a big deal.
CLARKE: Oh, it was pretty surreal on the day.
I know you know from cast interviews thatour pond days go pretty fast because they have a crazy schedule.
As we know, it’s a real pond.
You’re dealing with the elements.
You’re dealing with stunt doubles and clothing changes and hair and makeup changes.
I think the first question that everyone asked was, Is Andie [MacDowell] going to do this?
We were still writing.
CONKIE: Yeah, we were in LA.
We had a glass of wine with Andie.
We said, Would you ever consider jumping into the pond?
And she said, Oh, yeah, in that beautiful accent.
And we said, Okay, lets do it!
CLARKE: Yep, and it went from there.
CONKIE: Well, she did go into Lake Ontario at the cove in November.
So, she’s pretty brave.
I’ve never seen anyone do that.
CLARKE: Oh, that was incredible.
That was Episode 5 of last year.
From that moment, we knew we could do it.
So, we knew this was coming.
[Laughs] So, that was a trial, but we figured it out.
They looked incredible out there.
CONKIE: They looked amazing.
CONKIE: It was such an iconic shot.
It really should be on a poster.
CLARKE: It was a moment a long time coming.
It happened at the perfect time, speaking of timing.
Im just really, really proud of taking the journey there.
Can you walk us through figuring out when Del would go when she used the pond?
It had to be that.
We wanted this moment with the wedding to affirm for her thatit’s not wrong, that the lovewasthere.
It isthelove story of our show is the love between Del and Colton.
It’s exactly how she remembered it.
It had to be the wedding.
He didn’t feel like he was being a good husband.
He and Kat were completely estranged.
He and Del sort of shut her out.
It was a broken, broken family.
For a long time, it was good.
Who Is Casey in The Way Home?
Their story certainly isnt told yet.
CLARKE: The big one that we knew we had to answer was what’s the deal with Colton?
That end of Season 2 reveal of him watching himself, we had to answer that.
That one had to be answered this year.
But I’m excited by the ones that we’ve kind of still left open-ended.
I think we clarified Casey a bit.
But there’s still story there, of course, to tell.
Another one was to answer who wrote the letters.
I think, especially the Casey of it all, their story certainly isn’t told yet.
That’s all I’ll say.
CONKIE: Thats all we can say.
Alex, I did want to touch on something you mentioned on set.
Vaughan is the only one who knows the endgame for this show, right?
We had to because it was too cruel.
The Way Home Creators Are in Awe of Their Fans Petition
Its the greatest compliment.
You just gave us a wonderful season, but obviously, I want more.
Where are you at in the renewal process?
Are there high hopes for good news soon?
CLARKE: Oh, we were always hopeful.
It’s really touched us.
I think it’s so, so kind and so amazing and we’re so flattered.
Of course, we’re hoping.
We usually know mid-March.
We are absolutely hopeful.
And if we do get the opportunity, we know where we want to go.
We know what we want to do.
As we said earlier, there are just so many more stories to tell.
What does that petition mean to you?
CLARKE: I think every little bit helps.
I can’t imagine that it doesn’t.
It’s so lovely.
It’s the greatest compliment.
CONKIE:The support from the fans right from the get-go has been astounding.
CLARKE:The Way Homefans are unlike any others.
I’m in awe of them.
I’m in awe of how they dissect our episodes and find the clues.
[Laughs] But it’s amazing.
I love the engagement that the fans show for our show.
CLARKE: It’s the best.
CLARKE: Thank you, Perri.
CLARKE: Fingers crossed!
Lets just keep em crossed.
Fingers, toes, eyes, whatever you got!
