Perkins directed Neon’s biggest-ever hit,Longlegs, last year.

And he has now unveiled his follow-up, the horror-comedyThe Monkey.

Based on aStephen Kingshort story,The MonkeydeliveredNeon’s second-biggest domestic debut ever, behindLonglegs.

Finishing just outside the top five was another animated movie, the Chinese importNe Zha 2.

Globally,Ne Zha 2has hit the $1.8 billion mark, becoming the highest-grossing animated film in history.

The Monkey is based on Stephen King’s 1980 short story of the same name. The plot follows twin brothers Hal and Bill, played by Theo James and Christian Convery, who discover a cursed monkey toy in their father’s attic. The toy is linked to a series of gruesome deaths, forcing the brothers to confront its dark power years later.

Elsewhere, the faith-based filmThe Unbreakable Boy, starringZachary Levi, debuted with a little over $2 million.
