In his hands, the character becomes a complex and tragic everyman rather than merely a two-dimensional mobster.

Its reason is twisted.

Its purpose is dark.

It’s also reasonably technically realistic, with actual German U-boat submariners serving as consultants on set.

He wrestles with internal conflicts while his children struggle with their identities and their place in the family.

However, Mitchum got the most out of it and received considerable praise for his work.

The two find themselves up against fearsome enemies, but this grueling test helps them rediscover themselves.

That Mitchum is capable of holding his own alongside a Western star like Wayne is impressive in itself.

They’re helped significantly by the lean, effective direction from genre legendHoward Hawks.

The result isa winning ’60s Western that more than holds up today.

Mitchum appears as General Norman Cota, who plays a crucial role in the Allied invasion of Omaha Beach.

Out of the Pastis charmingly hardboiled, with tons of snappy dialogue and stylish performances across the board.

Mitchum is terrific, as is Kirk Douglas as his opponent, gambling kingpin Whit Sterling.
