As the interview was conducted last August, Holland also addressed the ridiculous controversy over the casting ofZendaya.
Peters relationship with Tony Stark, and having Dominos Day movie marathons with the cast.
Can you tell us something about what were seeing today?
How has it changed, and how has Jons process worked with you guys?
HOLLAND: The basic script and the arc for my character especially has remained the same.
(laughs) But no, hes fantastic to work with.

Or I want Spider-Man to do this?
Did you go to Queens at all?
Take in the environment?
Image via Sony Pictures
It was a science school, and I am in no way a science student (laughter).
But it was actually really informative because schools in London are so different.
I would go to school every day in a suit and tie, with just boys.
Image via Sony Pictures
But yeah, it was a really great experience.
HOLLAND: Nobody knew.
(laughter) But yeah, no, it was fun.
Image via Sony Pictures
It was really fun.
Can you tell us about the audition process we had heard about where you worked with Robert Downey Jr.?
HOLLAND: That was intense, man.
Image via Marvel
I was shooting other movies at the time, so I was lucky because I was sort of preoccupied.
I think if I wasnt working, I wouldve imploded just waiting to hear for this movie.
I did two self takes with Joel Kinnaman cause I was making a movie with him.
Image via Sony Pictures
That for me was a good enough of an experience as itself I didnt need to get the movie.
But when this job came in, Ive never been happier.
It was the craziest day of my life, it was insane.
Image via Marvel
And we were waiting around for what felt like months before I found out.
What was your audition scene?
HOLLAND: My audition scene, God.
Image via Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios
The scene between Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons.
I was like, But my lines are for Spider-Man so who else could I possibly be auditioning for?
They were like, We dont know.
Image via Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios
Nothing from the movie.
But then my final audition with Robert was a scene that was inCivil Warbetween the two of us.
Can you talk about the action scenes and what we can expect to see out of this one?
Image via Sony/Marvel
The kind of skill level Spider-Man is at now and having an aerial villain…
HOLLAND: Its exciting.
And its really fun.
Im definitely excited for you guys to see stuff that Spider-Man has never done before.
What is his banter or relationship like when he meets Shocker and Vulture?
But here the Vulture is definitely a formidable opponent, and he is terrifying.
His suit is absolutely terrifying.
Can you talk about how you see your Peter Parker and compare him to the previous versions?
HOLLAND: Thats a good question.
But then with Andrew, I thought his Spider-Man was fantastic.
Historically very often Peter resents being Spider-Man.
He quits all the time in the comics.
What is this Peters relationship to being Spider-Man?
But then through a turn of events things happen, and it becomes a real serious matter.
What can you say about how his relationship with Tony Stark has evolved sinceCivil War?
HOLLAND: I think were seeing the beginning of a sort of father-son relationship.
And, no, let me take that back.
Its a very different side of Stark than youve ever seen before.
He wants him rescue cats out of trees and do less lasers.
How does Peter respond to that?
HOLLAND: I couldnt answer that because Id give something away.
This is a coming-of-age movie, and it has nods to John Hughes movies and stuff like that.
Did Jon give you any movies to watch, maybe with the cast together?
HOLLAND: Yeah, he gave us a lot of movies to watch.
We had like a Dominos day, and it was so amazing, so great.
Plug Dominos there, thank you.
(laughter) But yeah, it was great, endless.
Uncle Ben is such a big figure for Peter in the comics and the previous films.
Where does he fit in this movie?
HOLLAND: Thats a really good question… that I cant answer.
HOLLAND: Yeah, its definitely an ensemble piece.
The first month of shooting was purely high school stuff, and it was so much fun.
And working with Jacob…
I mean, Jacob is the man, and he is awesome.
The world is gonna love him he is fantastic.
Whats your relationship been like working with Jon [Watts]?
HOLLAND: Jons awesome; hes such a great guy.
Was that your understanding too?
HOLLAND: Thats the first time Im hearing that… (laughter).
No, Im sure that is the formula theyre going to take.
Weve seen you playing around on Instagram and dancing and stuff.
Are you breaking out any dance moves in this movie?
HOLLAND: No no no… no, Im not in this movie.
Peter Parker cant dance.
He can flip and climb up walls and do backflips, but he definitely cant dance.
Coming fromCivil War, was there anything you wanted to change or do differently?
Obviously its the same character, but you know…
HOLLAND: Not really.
Whats your favorite new gizmo that the Spidey suit has?
So without giving anything away, that.
They said that you made the actual liquid for the webbing on set.
Did you get to play with it afterwards?
So they immediately took it off me and I wasnt allowed to play with it anymore.
Speaking of gadgets, inCivil Warwe saw Peter interacting with some pretty old tech.
Did you have to have to have any of that explained to you?
(laughter) Hes like, Just act dude, you got this.
HOLLAND: I was terrified watchingCivil Warfor the first time.
But it was an amazing day seeing it for the first time.
As soon as it finished, I was like lets watch it again!
HOLLAND: Oh, well I love Doc Ock.
I thinkSpider-Man 2is one of the greatest superhero movies ever made.
But I think Venom is someone Id love to kick the crap out of one day.
Speaking of eye-opening moments, obviously going to Germany is an eye-opening experience for Peter.
What is his experience coming back to Queens after having gone and beat up Captain America?
HOLLAND: Its almost like he went to summer camp and now hes back at school again.
But theres definitely light at the end of the tunnel for Peter Parker.
Can you talk about that?
Shes sort of busting your balls a lot, and it seems kind of fun.
Can you talk about that relationship?
HOLLAND: Yeah, Michelle is a very interesting character.
Like Jon has picked the strangest books for her to read.
Its been really cool.
Shes having a hard time right now, the girl fromGood Morning Americareferred to her as a colored person.
Some Marvel fans bashed her a little when news broke out.
Have you spoken to her?
HOLLAND: The thing with Zendaya is she knows that.
From being on set with her, everyone is always complimenting everyone, and everyone is very loving here.
Thats what I love about working for Marvel is how welcoming and kind everyone is.
And Z is perfect.
Shes so strong willed, its not going to shake her at all.
HOLLAND: Yeah, sometimes.
I mean I dont get recognized all that much.
To make these kids happy was just incredible.
And also just meeting kids on the street.
Do you put on the accent, too?
(laughter)
And so with great responsibility comes what?
HOLLAND: Thats Tobeys line, not my line.
