And we get a prolonged, grotesque display of his intestines being pulled out.

Don’t get too attached to these characters: they won’t be around for long.

The scene immediatelysets up the level of dark humor and nihilism for the rest of the movie.

We see the possible dangers of what happens when the monkey lowers its drumstick.

And we see that the victims are random the monkey doesn’t take requests.

This approach is already evident in Perkins' 2015directorial debut,The Blackcoat’s Daughter.

The bleakness of colors and imagery is already an indication of the film’s atmosphere and major themes.

The trouble that most slow-burns come across is that they are, well, slow.

In this film, the main intrigue is introduced by way ofRuth Wilson’s mysterious-sounding voice-over.

All that before we really know anything about the story or the characters.

Perkins employs the same technique inGretel & Hansel, even though its setting and style are completely different.

The opening sequence serves as a prologue that relays certain information.

The scene actually shows a crucial moment forunderstanding the storybut doesn’t reveal itself as such immediately.

Even if it’s something that looks mundane at first glance like a windup monkey toy.
