However, it ultimately sanitizes history, craftinga polished yet surface-level portrayalofFreddie Mercury.
It’s a bright, bubbly exercise in myth-making.

The latter was bold and groundbreaking, defying conventions.
“Few films in history have been as hypedasThe Force Awakens.
On release, it tapped into a wellspring ofStar Warsenthusiasm, grossinga whopping $2.07bn.
The story of the legendary British rock band Queen and lead singer Freddie Mercury, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid (1985).
Even then, however, there were grumbles about its recycling of old plotlines and preoccupation with the past.
Nearly a decade later, the films flaws have become more apparent.
The rehash ofA New Hopeis unmissable, and the cloying nostalgia is more frustrating than endearing.
Indeed, the seeds for the underwhelmingRise of Skywalkerwere sown in the derivative fan service ofThe Force Awakens.
The story mostly shuffles its characters around like plot devices, failing to delve into them adequately.
8’Ghostbusters: Afterlife' (2021)
Directed by Jason Reitman
“You miss them.
More than I can say.
This film is basically a pile of references in a trenchcoat.
There are callbacks to everything: proton packs, the Ecto-1, Crunch bars, etc.
While intended as a heartfelt tribute, at times,Afterlifecomes across as a cynical cash grab.
While some elements are enjoyable,Dear Evan Hansenreveals more problems the more one thinks about it.
It’s padded with filler scenes.
Some of the sillier moments became meme-ified, like a close-up of Evan’s crying face.
For all these reasons,Dear Evan Hansenhas unfortunately becomemore of a punchlinethan a stirring drama.
The flick was only ever aiming to be breezy entertainment, but it fails at that.

There’s almost negative character development across the film’s 146 minutes (!).
The difference is that the protagonists' superficiality is now less charming than it was when the series debuted.
Their conversations are frivolous and under-written, lacking the spark and snap of the best episodes.
The performers don’t seem that invested either, and they collectively took home the Razzie for Worst Actress.
Overall,an overindulgent, tone-deaf mess.
I f**… hard.

At the time, it made one roll one’s eyes, but now it seems borderline inexplicable.
It promises thrills and steaminess, yetit delivers milquetoast sex scenes and hollow, unintentionally funny melodrama.
The themes are shallow, too, and the story is lightweight.
It’s striking how much public sentiment towardsThe Blind Sidesince its release.
Now, most criticize it for its sentimentality, outdated tropes, and factual inaccuracies.
This dispute has been the subject of lawsuits in recent years.

Directed by Tate Taylor
“You is kind.
He’s joined byAlicia Vikanderas Lili’s wifeGerda, who struggles to support her during her transition.
The whole thing feels overly intellectualized and Oscar bait-y.
It also largely ignores the more unsavory elements of some of its characters.
In the end, whileThe Birth of a Nationhas some strengths,12 Years a Slave, it is not.
This is a film that falls short of its potential.
